OLEA

europaea 'Majestic Beauty': "Majestic Beauty Fruitless Olive". Willow like foliage is a soft gray green that goes well with most colors. Smooth gray trunks & branches become gnarled & picturesque with age. Trees grow slowly, typically to 25-30' high & wide. Airy & fluffy looking, it is suitable as a specimen or as a hedge or screen. Bears almost no fruit, but so-called fruitless varieties are not always reliably barren. Thrives in hot, dry areas. Evergreen. Full sun. Zones 8-11.

OSMANTHUS

fragrans: "Sweet Olive". Large, evergreen shrub or small tree. Broad upright form is densely branched & covered with dark green finely toothed foliage. Tiny white flower clusters have delightful apricot-like fragrance. Full sun-partial shade. Slow growing to 10' high, 6-8' wide, larger with age. Zones 8-11.

x. fortunei: "Fortune's Sweet Olive". Attractive large shrub with small clusters of showy white blooms with incredible fragrance. Dense, dark green holly-like foliage throughout the year makes this an ideal background plant or screen. Can be pruned into a hedge of any size. Evergreen. Full sun. Can reach 15-20' tall & as wide. Fragrant. Zones 8-11.

x. fortunei 'San Jose': "Fortune's Osmanthus, Fortune's Sweet Olive". Broadleaf evergreen shrub. 15-20' tall, dense, oval rounded. Very fragrant flowers in late summer & fall. Sun to partial shade. The 'San Jose' selection, compared to Osmanthus x. fortunei, has larger flowers which are creamy yellow, is shrubbier & less cold hardy. Hardy to USDA zone 7. A U. C. Davis Arboretum All-Star Selection.

 

OSTEOSPERMUM

ecklonis 'Serenity' Series: "Serenity African Daisy". A profusion of flowers carpet the garden. Excellent for erosion control on slopes. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape & extend the life span of the plant. Blooms Spring - Autumn. Drought tolerant. Deer resistant. Grows to 18" tall & 24" wide. Full sun. Cut back in early autumn to encourage re-blooming & improve habit. Use as a groundcover, in a rock garden, or containers.

           'Dark Purple: Rich purple, daisy-like flowers with a black center.
           'Lavender Dark': Deep lavender, daisy-like flowers with dark centers.

hybrid 'Symphony' Series: "Symphony African Daisy". These are truly the most heat tolerant varieties. They flower continuously all summer, even in hot climates. Their mounding growth habit makes them suitable for baskets, patio planters, & flower beds.
          'Lemon': A cheery yellow bloom.
          'Orange': A vibrant orange flowers with a dark eye.

hybrid 'Voltage Yellow': "African Daisy". When shoppers are craving bright colors the most, this unique clear yellow variety will stop traffic - it's the first Osteospermum in bloom & the last out of bloom. It features very flexible stems making it ideal for large baskets & containers. The low spreading habit makes it ideal for landscapes. Height 10-16"; width 24-28". Full sun. Hardy to 32ºF.

 

OZOTHAMNUS

diosmifolius: "Rice Flower, Sago Bush". A small woody perennial shrub to about 5' high but is sometimes larger. The medium green leaves are small, linear in shape to about ½" long. The small flowers occur in clusters of 20-100 at the ends of the branches & are usually white with a pink tinge but forms in varying shades of pink are also known. Drought tolerant when mature. Sun-partial shade. USDA zones 8-9.

'Sussex Silver': "Rice Flower, Sago Bush". A beautiful English selection of a New Zealand native shrub. Fast growing evergrey plant with cool cord-like stems coated in fine white & a great accent to the small silver leaves. Small white flowers in summer. Best in well-drained soils & requires little water in full sun. To 6' tall & as wide in 3 years. Zone 7.

 

PALMS

Chamaerops excelsa: (Trachycarpus fortunei). "Windmill Palm". Tree-like palm with distinctive hairy black fibers covering its slender, graceful trunk. Large fan-like leaves make an attractive compact crown. Good for garden or patio, effective near a pool. Full sun-partial shade. Moderate grower to 25-30' & more tall, to 8' wide crown. Zones 8-11.

Chamaerops humilis: "Mediterranean Fan Palm". Attractive multi-trunked habit forming rounded clumps. Attractive crown of large blue-green fan-like leaves. Use as an accent or barrier planting. Perfect for containers. Evergreen. Full sun-partial shade. Slow growing clumps to 10-15' tall & wide. Zones 8-11.

Cocos plumosa: (Arecastrum romanzoffianum, Syagrus romanzoffiana). "Queen Palm". Handsome, sturdy specimen with exceptionally straight trunk topped by glossy, feathery fronds 10-15' long. Great vertical effect for large gardens. Useful for park & street plantings. Evergreen. Full sun-partial shade. Fast grower to 25-30' tall, 10-15' wide crown, larger with age. Zones 9-11.

Cycas revoluta: "Sago Palm". As a 2-3' tall youngster, has an airy, fern-like appearance; with age (grows very slowly to as high as 10'), looks more like a palm. Leaves are 2-3' long (larger on very old plants), divided into many narrow, leathery segments. A rosette of dark green, feathery leaves grow from a central point at the top of a single trunk. Tough, tolerant house or patio plant; also good subject for bonsai. Hardy to 15°F / -9°C. Zones 8-24;H1,H2.

 

PANDOREA

jasminoides 'Lady Di': (P.j. 'Alba'). "White Bower Vine". Evergreen. Twining branches of this rapid grower 15-25' long has bright green compound foliage. In summer, loose clusters of trumpet-shaped, white flowers with a creamy throat are very showy. Full sun. Zones 9-11.

jasminoides 'Rosea': "Pink Bower Vine". Twinning branches of this rapid grower 15-25' long has bright green compound foliage. Trumpet-shaped, bright pink blooms with rose-pink throats appear most of the summer. Evergreen. Full sun. Zones 9-11.

jasminoides 'Variegata': "Variegated Bower Vine". Evergreen. Fast growth to 20-30' long. Variegated foliage. Each leaf has 5-7 oval, 1-2" long leaflets with pointed tips. Typically unscented flowers are white with a pink throat. They bloom from late spring to early fall. Full sun. Zones 9-11.

 

PARTHENOCISSUS

tricuspidata: "Boston Ivy". Semi-evergreen in mild winter areas. Leaves are glossy, to 8" wide, variable in shape; usually three lobed or divided into three leaflets. Autumn color varies from orange to wine red. Clings tightly, grows fast to make a dense, uniform wall cover. This is the ivy of the Ivy League; covers brick or stone areas where English Ivy freezes. In intensely hot regions, plant only on walls with a Northern or Eastern exposure. Zones 1-24.

 

PASSIFLORA

edulis 'Lavender Lady': "Lavender Lady Passion Vine ". Evergreen vine bears dark green leaves with three almost equal, rounded lobes, to 4" across. Bears lavender purple flowers with several very fine, delicate violet filaments, faintly banded with white. Petals reflex. Sun-partial shade, probably damaged below 25°F.

 

PENSTEMON

heterophyllus 'Margarita BOP': "Margarita BOP Beardtongue, Santa Margarita Foothill Penstemon". Foot long spikes of yellow tinged buds open to violet blue flowers that change to purple pink from the spring to fall. Narrow deep green leaves contrast well with the bloom. Makes a great addition to rock gardens as well as low water use borders & beds. California native. Partial-full sun. Attracts butterflies & birds. Fast growing to 2' tall & wide. Zones 6-10. A U. C. Davis Arboretum All-Star Selection.

hybrid 'Appleblossom': "Appleblossom Garden Penstemon". Evergreen. 3' wide by 3' tall, bushy erect habit. Tubular pink flowers. These will re-bloom after cutting back hard in late winter to get first spring bloom on a short plant.

'Blackberry Ice': "Blackberry Ice Beardtongue". Panicles of deep purple tubular flowers are produced from summer to early fall. Hardy, semi-evergreen, suitable for poor to moderate fertile, well-drained soil. Full sun-partial shade. Height of 30". Zones 4-9.

hybrid 'Firebird': "Firebird Garden Penstemon". Evergreen. 3' wide by 3' tall, bushy erect habit. Tubular red flowers. These will re-bloom after cutting back hard in late winter to get first spring bloom on a short plant.

hybrid 'Garnet': "Garnet Garden Penstemon". Bushy, narrow leafed perennial has small, bell shaped, deep wine red flowers & green foliage. Full sun. Blooms mid-summer to fall. Height 24-30". Zones 7-10.

hybrid 'Holly White': "Holly White Garden Penstemon". Evergreen. 3' wide by 3' tall, bushy erect habit. Tubular white flowers. These will re-bloom after cutting back hard in late winter to get first spring bloom on a short plant.

hybrid 'Midnight': "Midnight Garden Penstemon". Evergreen. 3' wide by 3' tall, bushy erect habit. Tubular purple flowers. These will re-bloom after cutting back hard in late winter to get first spring bloom on a short plant.

'Prairie Twilight' P.P. #19893: "Prairie Twilight Beardtongue". Tubular pink flowers with white tips & throats in late May to mid-June. Wide, lance shaped, opposite leaves clasp sturdy stems. Plants form dense, uniform heavy-blooming upright stands. Height to 22"; spread to 26". Upright habit. Full sun. Use as a middle-back border plant, in containers, or as a cut flower. USDA zones 4-9.

hybrid 'Wine Kissed': "Wine Kissed Garden Penstemon". Wine red & white bicolor flowers in spring & summer. Green foliage. Height to 2'.

'Red Riding Hood': "Beardtongue". PP#18,950. A standout variety with excellent well-branched & compact, upright habit. 'Red Riding Hood' has intense watermelon red flowers that number in the hundreds on a 1 year old plant. A great item for container production & in the garden. Attracts hummingbirds & is a wonderful cut flower too. Height 24-30"; width 18-24". Full sun-partial shade. Zone 5.

x. mexicali 'Pikes Peak Purple': "Pikes Peak Purple Beardtongue". A constant small, violet-purple flower blooms all summer long with narrow, lance-shaped evergreen foliage. It has a plant height of 15" & a spread of 12". It is best to plant it in a full-partial sun location, having a moist, well-drained area. Very heat & drought tolerant. Attracts hummingbirds & butterflies. Resistant to deer, rabbits, & squirrels. Looks great in a perennial bed or border, a naturalizing setting, a rock garden, or as a cut flower. Zone 5-8.

x. mexicali 'Red Rocks':This lovely hybrid is a 1999 Plant Select® winner. Developed by Bruce Meters, 'Red Rocks'® is named after Denver's famous amphitheater which was carved out of the spectacular red sandstone cliffs in the foothills west of the city. This hybrid has glossy, narrow foliage & tall spikes of stunning bright rose flowers with a white throat. This is a vigorous grower that performs best in moderately fertile, but well-drained soils. Red Rocks® will flower most vigorously with regular watering. 15" tall; 12" wide. Blooms June-August. Full sun-partial shade. USDA zone 4.

 

PEROVSKIA

atriplicifolia: "Russian Sage". Perennial. Likes well-drained soil, full sun, summer heat & winter chill. Branched, spike-like, lavender blue flower clusters. Blooms through summer. Gray-green aromatic foliage. Height 3' or more. All zones.

atriplicifolia 'Little Spires' P.P. #11,643: "Little Spires Russian Sage". A compact, moderate growing, multi-stemmed, shrub-like perennial. This dwarf version of Russian Sage does not flop over which is common with Perovskia atriplicifolia. Spikes of lavender blue flowers add a sense of lightness to the garden from summer to fall. PHLOX

hybrid 'Intensia® Blueberry': Intensia® Blueberry Phlox attracts butterflies with it's profusion of blue-purple flowers from spring to fall. It is also drought & heat tolerant, & low maintenance as it does not require dead-heading. Mounding habit. Full sun. Height 10-12";spread 8-12". Great in landscapes & containers. Hardy to 30ºF.

 

PHORMIUM

'Alison Blackman': "Alison Blackman New Zealand Flax". A striking, distinctive new cultivar! Overall color of gold & apricot tinged with pink. Arching habit. Height to 40-48"; spread to 40-48". Sun or shade. Hardy to 25ºF.

'Apricot Queen': "Apricot Queen New Zealand Flax". Another profusely clumping dwarf, (about 3'). The leaves are mostly gold with an apricot overlay & broadly margined in green. A hairline of maroon is evident along the margins in cooler weather.

'Golden Ray': "Golden Ray New Zealand Flax". Distinctive overall golden yellow appearance, leaves have a narrow green center with golden yellow stripes nearer the margins & a bronze-orange stripe on the very edge of the margin. Leaves are 50-75 mm wide.

'Jester': "Jester New Zealand Flax". This outstanding selection was introduced by Liner Plants NZ Limited. The distinctive foliage is bright pink centered with broad lime green stripes at the margins. The medium width leaves are 30-60 mm. Upright habit but the leaves are arching.

'Pink Stripe': "Pink Stripe New Zealand Flax". This cultivar that grows upright to 5-6' tall with 2-3" wide bronze-green (almost gray) leaves edged with pink. Plant full sun to light shade. It can tolerate fairly dry conditions (coastal) but looks best with occasional to regular irrigation. Hardy to 15-20°F. Possibly root hardy below these temperatures but with severe foliage damage unless protected. A nice fairly newer cultivar from South Africa. Pink edges fade in late summer - trim out foliage to enhance the showy new leaves. Also grown as Phormium 'Candy Stripe'.

'Platt's Black': "Platt's Black New Zealand Flax". This is the blackest of the Phormiums. Leaves are a uniform color, dark purple-black. A distinctly arching form of Phormium growing to 1m. Creates a very good contrast to other Phormiums. Evergreen. Frost hardy to -7º C.

'Rainbow Queen': "Rainbow Queen New Zealand Flax". Broad upstanding variegated foliage drooping at the tips to 3' high with rose red stripes on a bronzy green background. (Formerly Phormium Maori Queen).

'Rainbow Sunrise': "Rainbow Sunrise New Zealand Flax". Upright habit to 3' high with fine slender leaves colored light red to soft pink & margined bronze. Delicate in form & coloration. (Formerly Phormium Maori Sunrise)

tenax 'Atropurpureum': "New Zealand Bronze Flax". Hardy to zone 7. Strap-shaped, pointed leaves to 9' long by 5 wide. Reddish brown flower stalks bear many dark red to yellowish flowers. Leaves are purplish red. Full sun. Zones 8-11.

tenax 'Jack Spratt': "Jack Spratt New Zealand Flax". Leathery sword-like leaves in fans, rising directly from a fleshy root system. Compact dwarf plant with bronze foliage. Highly valued in gardens for their striking leaf variegations & striking landscape form. Also foliage highly valued in floral arrangements. Fast growing, dense, to 18" tall.

tenax 'Sundowner': "Sundowner New Zealand Flax". Erect growth to 5-6' tall, 6-8' wide, with leaves to 3½" wide. Olive or bronzy green foliage has stripes of pinkish red (aging to cream) at or near edges & a fine red edge; leaf undersides are grayish green.

tenax 'Surfer': "Surfer New Zealand Flax". Bronze-green leaves with deeper brown edges. Foliage is narrow & curving. Height 24-30". Full sun. Zones 9-10, H12-1.

x. 'Taya': "Taya New Zealand Flax". Deep chocolate-burgundy color with a silvery purple sheen underneath the foliage; new foliage is green-burgundy opening to purple chocolate. Unique color combination & growth habit. Forms clumps quickly. Slightly arching habit. To 4' tall. Leaf width 2-3". Evergreen & frost hardy to 23ºF (-7ºC). Excellent accent plant is great in patio containers mixed or monoculture. Zones 7A-11.

'Yellow Wave': "Yellow Wave New Zealand Flax". A Felix Jury bred hybrid that makes a low growing clump with broad weeping leaves in striking brilliant yellow. It develops some green variegation as the leaves reach maturity. This plant always looks distinctive. Grows to approximately 3' 3" tall. Evergreen. Semi-hardy. Full sun-partial shade.

 

PHOTINIA

fraseri: "Fraser's Photinia". Excellent densely branched shrub for hedge or screens. New growth emerges with bright bronze-red coloring, maturing to large, dark green leaves. Evergreen. It can be used as espalier or as a patio tree. Full sun. Moderate to fast grower to 8-12' high, 8-10' wide. Zones 7-9.

x. 'Parbri' PP# 17,476: "Fireball Red™ Red Tip Photinia".  This completely new Red Tip has been bred & selected for its bright red new growth. It grows to approximately 5-6' tall by 3-5' wide. The growth habit is tall upright shrub. It is perfect for colorful, low-growing foundation plantings, municipal plantings, & general garden plantings. Low maintenance. Frost tolerant. Disease tolerant. Sun-shade. Zones 7A-11.

 

PHYSOCARPUS

opulifolius 'Lady In Red': "Lady In Red Ninebark". Gorgeous, richly colored burgundy foliage highlights the large pink flowers in the Summer on this naturally compact shrub. From Spring to Fall, bright chestnut-red colored foliage is the key plant feature.In the early Summer, large, pink colored flowers permeate throughout the plant. The flower seedpods are beautiful, red-burgundy when dried, which can be used in Fall arrangements. The bark has a striated look. Height to 3-5' tall & 4-5' wide. Deer resistant. Low maintenance. Frost tolerant. Zones 4a-8b.

 

PINUS

densiflora 'Umbraculifera': "Tanyosho Pine". Broad, flat topped. Good for container, rock garden, or an Asian garden. Young trees have showy bark like that of P. densiflora. Slow to moderate growth to 12-20' tall, 18' wide. Evergreen. Full sun. Grafted to a standard form. Zones 2-10, 14-17.

densiflora 'Umbraculifera Compacta': "Compact Tanyosho Pine". A more dense habit to this very attractive evergreen with flat topped umbrella-like head. Red brown bark & bright green needles are other features. Full sun. Slow growing to 12' high, 18' wide. Grafted to a standard form. Zones 5-7.

 

PISTACIA

chinensis: "Chinese Pistache". Desirable ornamental tree with attractive, umbrella-like crown. Lustrous green leaves turn a brilliant orange-crimson in fall. Dependable for color for all garden situations. Full sun. Moderate grower to 30-35' tall, 25-35' wide, larger with age. Zone 6-9.

chinensis 'Keith Davey': "Keith Davey Pistache". Keith Davey Pistache was selected for its intense red / orange fall color, which shows even in warm climates & produces no seeds. It has all of the other attributes of a Pistache; a non-invasive root system, a rounded head for shade, a resistance to pest & disease, & a manageable growth rate & size, (approx. 40-60' tall). It is a superior tree for a homeowner's landscape, a parking lot or a park setting.

 

PITTOSPORUM

tenuifolium 'Marjorie Channon': "Marjorie Channon Kohuhu". Evergreen. Compact, slow-growing shrub to 8-12' tall & 6-8' wide. Dramatic, light green foliage with cream-colored margins on black stems. Brown-purple flowers in spring & summer. Part-full sun. Zones 8-11.

tenuifolium 'Silver Sheen': An evergreen, upright shrub that can grow upwards to 12-16' tall (some list it to 20') with small, oval silver-green leaves held on thin black branches. This cultivar has notably more open habit & smaller leaves than the species. Plant in full coastal sun or part shade. Seaside tolerant. The small leaves start uniformly round & elongate with age. A very showy & dramatic looking plant when the silver highlights in the leaves catch morning & afternoon light. This is further enhanced if a gentle breeze cause the branches to move, making the plant shimmer. Very fast growing. Can be maintained as a very nice looking formal hedge to 3-6' if tip pruned regularly. Has proven a little problematic in hotter inland locations with summer heat. Purple flowers in spring. Hardy to 15-20ºF.

tobira 'Variegata': "Variegated Mock Orange". Attractive mounding evergreen shrub with white, gray, & light green foliage. Creamy white flowers are small but have a terrific orange-blossom fragrance. Good border, hedge, or landscape accent. Full sun to partial shade. Moderate, compact grower to 6-8' tall & wide, larger with age. Zone 9-11.

tobira 'Wheeler's Dwarf': "Wheeler's Dwarf Mock Orange". Round, mounded shrub perfect as a low border, ground cover or container specimen. Prized for its dense, compact growth & glossy evergreen foliage, smaller than the species. Requires little maintenance. Full sun to partial shade. Moderate grower to 2-3' high & 4-5' wide. Zones 9-11.

 

PLATANUS

acerifolia 'Bloodgood': "London Plane Tree". Hybrid between Platanus occidentalis & Platanus orientalis; often sold under the latter name. Grows fast to 40-80' tall with a 30-40' spread. Creamy new bark weathers to gray. Big, rough surfaced leaves have 3-5 lobes, resembling maple leaves. Fall foliage color is yellow to brown, not striking. Ball-shaped brown seed clusters, usually on threadlike stalks, hang on the bare branches through winter; these are prized for winter arrangements. Looks very handsome in winter. Tolerates many soil types & stands up beautifully to smog, soot, dust, & reflected heat. Susceptible to mildew. Good tree for avenue, street, park, or large lawn. Resistant to anthracnose. Deciduous. Zone 2-24.

 

PLUMBAGO

x. 'Imperial Blue': "Imperial Blue Cape Plumbago". Makes a mounding shrub to 6' tall, 8-10' wide; or if tied to a support, grows as a vine to 12' or more. Oblong, 1-2", light to medium green leaves. Evergreen where frosts are absent or light; heavy frosts can burn new growth & blacken leaves, but recovery is fast. Good cover for bank, fence, wall; good background & filler plant. Bears medium blue, phlox-like flower clusters. Blooms from spring through summer, or nearly all year in warm frost-free locations.

 

PODOCARPUS

gracilior: "Fern Pine, Fern Podocarpus". A beautiful evergreen tree. From a rounded crown its dense pendant branches create a soft, graceful effect. Gray green, narrow leaves have a fern-like appearance. Excellent as a single specimen or as a clipped screen. Full sun-partial shade. Moderate grower to 50' tall, to 25' wide. Zones 9-11.

macrophyllus: "Yew Pine". Attractive lawn or patio tree. Pyramidal form takes to shearing well to become an effective accent, screen, or clipped hedge. Will also thrive in tubs or as a topiary. Evergreen. Full sun to partial shade. Slow grower kept to 15-20' tall & 6-8' wide or smaller when trimmed, larger with age. Zone 7-11.

macrophyllus 'Maki': "Shrubby Yew Pine". Medium size evergreen shrub with dense upright branching on a pyramidal form. It is heavily covered by dark green yew-like leaves. A wonderful hedge or screen plant that takes shearing very well. Full sun-partial shade. Slow-growing to 8-10' tall, 3-4' wide, larger when untrimmed. Zones 7-11.

ilex: "Holly Oak". Evergreen tree. To 30-60' tall & wide, with dense, rounded head & smooth dark gray bark. Leaves vary in shape & size, but are usually oval to lance shaped, 1-3" long, with smooth or prickly edges; rich dark green on top, covered with gray or yellow hairs beneath. Egg-shaped to nearly round 1-1½" acorns are gray brown with darker lines, half-enclosed in deep cap that tapers to stem. kelloggii: "California Black Oak". Deciduous tree. To 30-20' tall & wide, with short trunk, ascending branches & a rounded crown. Dark gray, furrowed, checked bark. Handsome foliage; leaves unfold soft pink or dusty rose, mature to dark, glossy green, turn yellow or yellow-orange in fall. Leaves are 4-10" long, 2½-6" wide, with deeply, sharply tapered lobes ending in bristly points. Oblong or almost conical, 1-1½" acorns enclosed by about half in bowl-shaped cap. lobata: "Valley Oak". Deciduous tree. California's mightiest oak, often reaching 70' or taller, with equal or greater spread. Massive trunk & limbs with thick, distinctly checked gray bark. Straight & erect during its first several decades of growth; more spreading with age. Limbs often picturesquely twisted; long, drooping outer branches sometimes sweep the ground. Deeply cut, round-lobes leaves are 3-4" long, 2-3" wide; dark green above, paler beneath. Shiny, 1½-2½" acorns are conical, enclosed by 1/3 in warty, bowl-shaped cap. chamaedrys 'Prostratus': "Creeping Germander". Dark glossy green, rounded leaves on woody stems form a thick cover 8-10" tall & up to 3' wide. Spikes of rosy lavender pink flowers bloom in spring & summer. Full sun. Attracts bees. Drought tolerant. Sunset zones 2-24.

fruticans: "Bush Germander". Loose, silvery-stemmed plant to 4-8' tall & wide, (or wider). Gray-green 1¼" long leaves are silvery white undersides, giving plant an overall silvery gray appearance. Blooms almost year-round, bearing lavender-blue flower spikes at branch ends. Thin & cut back before Spring growth begins. Mediterranean native with aromatic foliage & whorls of little flowers. fruticans 'Azureum': "Azure Blue Germander". Gray green leaves, silvery white below back the rare color of deep blue flowers in the garden, a darker blue than other Germanders. Tolerates poor, rocky soils, performs best in well drained soils. Evergreen. Full sun. Fast shrubby grower to 4-6' tall & wide. Zones 8-9.

majoricum (aroanium): "Germander". 4" tall groundcover, spread 2' or more. Full sun. Well-drained soil. No added fertilizer needed. Tiny gray-green leaves are fragrant when touched. Masses of rich purple flowers up to six months. Hardy to 0°F.

 

THUJA

occidentalis 'Emerald': (T. o. 'Smaragd') "Emerald Arborvitae". Narrow, densely branched pyramidal form displaying rich emerald green foliage. Holds its foliage color throughout winter. Excellent evergreen hedge or screening plant. Full sun. Moderate grower to 15' tall, 3-4' wide. Zones 4-8.

 

THYMUS

vulgaris: "English Thyme, Common Thyme". Variable plant to 1' high, 2' wide, with gray-green, narrow to oval leaves. White to lilac flowers in late spring to early summer. Good for edging or as a container plant. Use leaves fresh or dried as a seasoning. Full sun-partial shade. Sunset zones 1-24.

vulgaris argenteus 'Silver Edge': "Common Thyme". Low creeping perennial with leaves edged with creamy white. Full sun - partial shade.

x citriodorus 'Aureus': "Lemon Thyme". Small shrub, 4-12" tall, erect or spreading. Tiny leaves (to 3/8") have lemon scent. Flowers palest purple. Full sun - partial shade.

 

TRACHELOSPERMUM

asiaticum: "Asian Star Jasmine". Vigorous twining or sprawling shrubby vine displays small, fragrant creamy-yellow flowers. A tightly branched ground cover, or give it support to climb fence, trellis, arbor. Good in cascading planters. Evergreen. Full sun-partial shade. As a ground cover; 1-2' high, spreading to 10-12' & more. Zones 7-11.

jasminoides: "Star Jasmine". Beautiful evergreen vine prized or its very fragrant, star-shaped white flowers. Trains on posts, walls, or trellises, or use as a fast growing shrubby ground cover. Good container plant in cold climates. Full sun - partial shade. Vine with 18-20' twining branches 1-2' tall. Zones 8-11.

jasminoides 'Sassy': "Sarsaparilla Jasmine". Fragrant, root beer scented, white flowers. Numerous flowers in Spring. Bronzy new growth. Low maintenance. Spreading habit, useful as a groundcover. Frost tolerant. Height 12-18" tall by 12-24" wide. Sun or shade. Zones 8b-11.

 

TRISTANIA

laurina 'Elegant': "Water Gum". Slow growing, rather formal-looking plant with conical, dense crown. Mahogany colored bark peels off, revealing satiny white new bark beneath. 'Elegant' has broad leaves that are red when they emerge, turn green only when shaded by later growth. Clusters of small, faintly fragrant yellow flowers appear in late spring or early summer. Seedpods are like those of Eucalyptus but much smaller. To 10' tall & 5' wide at 8 years old; may eventually reach 45' or taller & 30' wide.

 

TULBAGHIA

violacea: "Lavender Society Garlic". As the more sociable member of the onion family, Lavender Society Garlic offers attractive clusters of lavender-colored, star-shaped blooms borne over narrow, blue-green leaves. Leaves & flower stems have a pleasing garlic fragrance. Perfect for adding a variety of form & color to the mixed border. Herbaceous perennial. Full sun. Moderate growth to 12" tall & wide. violacea 'Tricolor': "Tri-Color Society Garlic". Dainty heads of lilac-pink flowers on stalks rising above blue-gray grass-like foliage having thin white margins. New growth has pink tinge in early spring. Brushing against plants gives a garlic-like fragrance. Evergreen. Full sun. Vigorous growing clumps to 1' wide, foliage to 1' tall, flower stalks to 2'.
