sempervirens 'Purity': "Purity Evergreen Candytuft". Dark green, mounding foliage with many dense flower clusters. Suited for edging, border, rock garden, & groundcover. Compact habit. White flowers. Long-blooming. April-May. Height 6-9". Zone 4.

 

ILEX

aquifolium 'Argenteo-marginata': "Variegated English Holly". Popular selection with shiny, dark green leaves edged with creamy white margins. Pyramidal grower brightens winter gardens with showy red berries. Male English Holly pollenizer needed for berry set. Full sun-partial shade. Moderate grower to 15-20' or more tall, 8-12' wide. Zones 6-9.

cornuta 'Needleleaf': "Needleleaf Chinese Holly". Evergreen. Spiny, glossy green leathery leaves. Bright red berries. Full sun-partial shade. Zones 4-24, but needs long warm season to set fruit.

crenata 'Sky Pencil': (Ilex crenata 'Sky Sentry'™). "Sky Pencil Japanese Holly". The narrow, columnar form, is just right for small areas. Dark glossy green foliage holds its color year round. Outstanding for use as vertical accent, near entryways, or as a privacy screen. Ideal for shearing into topiary shapes. Evergreen. Insignificant blooms in spring. Slow growing to 6-8' tall & 2-3' wide. Full sun. Hardy -20° to -10°F.

hybrid 'Nellie R. Stevens': "Nellie R. Stevens Holly". One of the most attractive of all hollies. Evergreen. Hybrid between I. cornuta & I. aquifolium. Fast growing, densely conical to 15-20' tall, 10' wide. Glossy, leathery, sparsely toothed leaves to 3" long. Self-fruitful, but forms a heavier crop if pollinated by male variety of I. cornuta. It makes an excellent tall screen. Full sun. Evergreen. Zones 7-9.

vomitoria 'Stokes Dwarf': "Stokes Dwarf Yaupon Holly". Dwarf evergreen shrub. Its tight branches creating a spreading mound excellent for a low hedge, as a border, or around foundations. Tiny foliage on twiggy branches, takes well to shearing. Full sun-partial shade. Slow growing to 2-3' high, 4' wide. Zones 7-11.

x. altaclerensis 'Wilsonii': "Wilson Holly". Evergreen. Evenly spine-toothed, rich green leaves are thick, leathery, 5" long, 3" wide. Heavy producer of bright red berries. Height 15-20'. Zones 3b-24.

acuminata 'Blue Dawn': "Blue Dawn Morning Glory". Excellent fast-growing arbor, bank, or slope cover with dark green leaves & large blue violet flowers. Aging flowers turn pinkish for a two toned effect. Free-flowering perennial vine. Flowers the first season. Evergreen. Full sun. Fast growing stems to 25' in one season. Zones 9-11.

 

JASMINUM

polyanthum: "Pink Jasmine". Fast growing evergreen vine prized for its spectacular spring display of pink buds opening to intensely fragrant pinkish white flowers. Use as a climber over trellis or arbor, groundcover, or in containers. Full sun. Strong growing to 20'. Zones 8-10.

 

JUNIPERUS

chinensis 'Spartan': "Spartan Juniper". Handsome, rapidly growing specimen forms densely branched columnar form useful as a screen or windbreak. Excellent sheared topiary. Durable evergreen, tolerates heat, cold, & drought. Full sun. Fast grower to 15' tall, 3-5' wide.

chinensis 'Torulosa': "Hollywood Juniper". Artistic appearance to the rustic twisted form; useful accent anywhere. Does particularly well in coastal environment. Easily adapts to specially trained topiary shapes. Evergreen. Full sun. Fast growing to 15' high, 10' wide. Zones 5-9.

scopulorum 'Tolleson's Blue Weeping: "Tolleson's Blue Weeping". Gracefully arching, drooping branches make this tree-like form a favorite landscape specimen. indica 'Whit VI' - Burgundy Cotton® P.P.#14438 P2: "Burgundy Cotton Crape Myrtle". A Carl Whitcomb introduction. White flowers with yellow stamens, but pinkish under cool conditions. indica 'Whit II' - Dynamite® P.P.#10296: "Dynamite Crape Myrtle". Another C. Whitcomb introduction, Dynamite Crape Myrtle grows upright & has leaves that appear crimson at first, but change quickly to a medium green. Dynamite's buds are crimson before flowering & bloom into cherry red flowers. These are more red than the cultivars that were available in the market previously. The flowers will be a dark scarlet red on hot sunny days & may be lighter red that occasionally have white variegation on cloudy cooler days. indica 'Muskogee': "Muskogee Crape Myrtle". Panicles of light lavender pink flowers bloom in summer amid glossy green foliage that turns red in fall. indica 'Whit III' - Pink Velour® P.P. #10319: "Pink Velour® Crape Myrtle". A Carl Whitcomb introduction. Selected as one of the "2003 Oklahoma Proven" & winner of the "2007 Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's Gold Medal Plant Award". It has bright pink flowers & distinct dark wine foliage which peaks in the spring. Large shrub or small tree of 12' or more. High mildew resistance. indica 'Whit I' - Raspberry Sundae® P.P. #10297: "Raspberry Sundae Crape Myrtle". Deciduous. Use as a shrub or trained into a small tree. Dark green foliage turns orange in the fall. Raspberry pink flowers from mid-summer to early fall. Height to 5-15'. Spread from 5-13'. Full sun. Zones 6-9.

indica 'Whit IV' - Red Rocket® P.P. #11342: "Red Rocket Crape Myrtle". A Carl Whitcomb introduction, Red Rocket® has huge, up to 20" long, cherry red flower clusters. Flowering begins in July & will continue until frost. New growth is a red-purple color & new wood is red in color, the leaves will fade to dark green later in the season. It has an upright growth habit & can get up to 20' tall at maturity. This cultivar is highly resistant to powdery mildew & has some drought tolerance. Full sun. Zone 6. A U. C. indica 'Whit VIII' - Rhapsody In Pink® P.P. #16616: "Rhapsody In Pink Crape Myrtle". A Carl Whitcomb introduction. Soft pink flowers. New growth is almost purple & persists most of the season. Upright form to 12'. High mildew resistance. Distinctly unique landscape appearance with soft pink flowers against nearly purple foliage. Full sun. Zones 7-9.

indica 'Seminole': "Seminole Crape Myrtle". Displays large, long lasting clusters of clear pink crepe-like flowers in summer. Handsome foliage has bronzy cast in spring, bright green in summer, golden fall color. Mildew resistant. Full sun. Deciduous. Moderate growing tree, rounded dome 15-20' tall & wide. As a shrub can be kept to 6-8' tall & wide. Zones 7-9.

indica 'Whit VII' - Siren Red® P.P. #14975 P3: "Siren Red® Crape Myrtle". A Carl Whitcomb introduction. "Oxblood red" flowers are distinctly darker red than 'Dynamite®' or 'Red Rocket®'. Darkness/intensity of red is less effected by cool, cloudy conditions. New growth is wine, then quickly changes to dark green. The slowest grower of the 'Whit' reds but may reach 3' in one growing season in a 3-5 gallon container. May reach 10' at maturity. High mildew resistance. Darkest red flowers yet. Full sun. Zones 7-9.

indica 'Whit V' - Tightwad Red® P.P. #11312: "Tightwad Red® Crape Myrtle". A Carl Whitcomb introduction. It is the first true dwarf crape myrtle with "Madder Red" flowers (lighter under cool,cloudy conditions). Flowers are sterile & produce no distracting seed pods. Plants grow as a dense half-circle mound with little or no pruning required. The low mound form continues with age. New leaves are wine/red quickly changing to purplish green, then to dark steely green. Leaves are about ¼-½ the size of normal crape myrtles. High mildew resistance. Full sun. Zones 7-9.

indica 'Tuscarora': "Tuscarora Crape Myrtle". Deciduous flowering large shrub or small tree bearing profuse crepe-like coral-pink flowers throughout summer. LAMIUM

maculatum 'Beacon Silver': "Spotted Dead Nettle". Silver foliage with a green margin; pink flowers in July - August. Height 6-10". Zone 4. Semi-evergreen, mat forming, with neat, colorful foliage & hooded flower spikes.

maculatum 'Pink Pewter': "Spotted Dead Nettle". Perennial. All zones. Trailing stems sprawl along ground or hang from wall or container. Heart-shaped, 1½-2" leaves in neat pairs are bluntly toothed at edges; hooded pink flowers are carried in short spikes. Usually seen as hanging basket plant; can be used as ground cover in shade. Needs rich soil, plenty of water. Deciduous in cold winters. Partially evergreen where winters are mild, but old shabby stems should be cut off to make room for fresh new growth. Height 4-8".

maculatum 'White Nancy': "Spotted Dead Nettle". Variegated leaves are nearly all silver with a narrow green margin. Pure white flowers in July - August. Height 6-10". Zone 4.

camara 'Dallas Red': "Dallas Red Lantana". Upright; true red flowers at some stages of growth, but when not fully red it will be blended with orange & yellow. Leaves are dark green & rounded. Created a mound about 3' high in landscape. Full sun.

camara 'Irene': "Irene Lantana". Upright; flowers have a strong fuchsia color, often blended with pink & yellow. Growth habit identical to 'Dallas Red'. Full Sun.

montevidensis 'White Trailing': "Trailing White Lantana". Clusters of small pure white flowers are surrounded by spreading green foliage. Blooms spring - fall. Full sun. Height to 18". Zone 9.

nobilis: "Grecian Bay Bush, Sweet Bay". Slender conical form grows into a small pyramidal tree. Valued for its strongly fragrant foliage, used as a flavorful seasoning. Takes well to clipping for formal hedges or topiary. Good in containers. Evergreen. Full sun-partial shade. Slow to 12-15' tall as a shrub, 20-35' tall & 15-20' wide as a tree, can be larger. nobilis 'Saratoga': "Saratoga Bay Laurel". Slender conical form grows into a small pyramidal tree. Valued for its strongly fragrant foliage, used as a flavorful seasoning. angustifolia 'Premier': "Premier English Lavender". Dark purple flowers have an airy appearance & green foliage. Blooms summer to fall. Drought tolerant & has a powerful fragrance. Full sun. Height to 24". Zones 5-9.

angustifolia 'Thumbelina Leigh': "Thumbelina Leigh English Lavender". A dwarf English Lavender. It is extremely aromatic with bright blue-violet flowers that will appear up to three times per year if pruned after flowering. Full sun. Deer resistant & waterwise. Compact foliage to 6" tall, 12" wide;12" high when in bloom. Evergreen. Zones 5-9.

intermedia 'du Provence': "du Provence Hedge Lavender". Cross between L. latifolia & L. angustifolia. Height 24" tall. Light grayish fuzzy leaves with long flower spikes. Very dark blue flowers, much darker than L. 'Hidcote'. Full sun. Evergreen.

stoechas 'Anouk' P.P.# 16,685: "Anouk Lavender". A new & distinct cultivar of Lavender plant named 'Anouk'. Characterized by its compact, upright, & mounded plant habit. Dense & bushy plant form with gray-green aromatic foliage & large purple flowers with violet bracts. Height 24-36" with an equal spread. Blooms throughout the entire growing season. Hardy to 0ºF.

stoechas 'Quasti': "Otto Quasti Spanish Lavender". Perennial. Full sun. Well-drained soil. Grayish foliage. Generous lavender flower clusters tufted with showy purple bracts. Blooms in early summer. Height 1½ - 3'. Zones 4-24. Same as stoechas excepts the bracts are larger. A cross between L. dentata & L. stoechas made by Otto Quasti. A U. C. Davis Arboretum All-Star Selection.

stoechas 'Silver Anouk' P.P.# 20,068: "Silver Anouk Lavender". A compact, upright, evergreen shrub with narrow, silver-green foliage. In summer, it has showy heads of dark purple flowers, arranged in vertical stripes, topped with pale purple bracts. Height to 3', spread to 20". Full sun. Hardy to zone 6. Plants of this Lavender differ from the parent, 'Anouk', primarily in leaf color.

stoechas 'Winter Bee': "Winter Bee Spanish Lavender". Bluish purple flowers on gray foliage. Blooms spring - fall. Height to 15". Full sun. Zone 8.

stoechas 'Winter Lace': "Winter Lace Spanish Lavender". A profuse & early flowering lavender with huge dark purple flower spikes that feature showy wings on top. Dense, mounding, upright habit with grey-green foliage. More resistant to diseases & humidity tolerant. Height & width of 24". Blooms from spring thru summer. Full sun in well-drained soil. Zone 8.

x. 'Goodwin Creek': "Goodwin Creek Lavender". A handsome hybrid of Lavandula heterophylla & Lavandula lanata. It is vigorous, yet remains compact, growing to about 2-3'. It has silvery gray, toothed-edged foliage, similar  to Lavandula dentata, but larger. Blooms are soft blue-lavender whorled flower spikes on short stems, appearing nearly year round. x. superbum 'Becky': "Shasta Daisy". 2003 PPA Perennial Plant Of The Year. A robust variety with huge, single white daisy-like blooms on tall sturdy stems from May-October. Foliage always looks nice - doesn't flop. Height 24-36"; spread 24". USDA zone 4.

x. superbum 'Lacrosse' USPPP: "Shasta Daisy". Pure white daisies with a gold center & open quilled petals that flatten as they mature. Blooms June-October. Very compact habit to 10" tall & 20" spread. Full sun-partial shade. USDA zone 4.

x. superbum 'Esther Read': "Shasta Daisy". Hardy sturdy perennial, valuable for summer & fall bloom in all climates. Most popular double white with longest bloom. Popular for cut flower. Prefers full sun, but will grow in partial shade in hot summer climate areas.

 

LEUCOPHYLLUM

frutescens: "Texas Ranger, Texas Sage, Cenizo". To 6-8' tall & wide, with striking silver foliage & light purple, open, bell-shaped flowers in summer. Slow growing evergreen shrub. Very heat & drought tolerant. Attracts beneficial insects. Full sun. Requires little pruning as a shrub, but can be successful as a hedge if sheared. Sunset zones 7-24, H1, H2. A U. C. langmaniae 'Lynn's Legacy': "Lynn's Legacy Leucophyllum, Lynn's Legacy Texas Ranger". Evergreen shrub. Fuzzy, lush, light green foliage forms a dense, uniform shrub that works well for an informal hedge. LIGUSTRUM

japonicum 'Texanum': "Wax Leaf Privet". Densely branched habit with glossy foliage responds well to pruning into a topiary or small standard trees. Displays profusion of white blooms in late spring. Useful hedge, screen, or windbreak. Evergreen. Full sun-partial shade. Fast growing to 8-10' tall, 4-6' wide. Zones 7-11.

 

LIMONIUM

perezii: "Statice, Sea Lavender". Perennial. Large, leathery, green basal leaves contrast with airy clusters of tiny, delicate flowers on nearly leafless, many branched stems. To 3' tall, with flower clusters spreading nearly as wide. Calyx is rich purple, corolla white. Long spring & summer bloom. Flowers are good for cutting & keeping their color when dried. Leaves up to 1' long, including stalks. First-rate beach plant. Often naturalizes in coastal Southern California. Damaged at 25°F / -4°C but useful even where it freezes out occasionally; nursery grown seedlings develop fast. Need afternoon shade in zone 13. Zones 13,15-17,20-24. Often freezes in zones 14, 18, & 19.

styraciflua 'Palo Alto': "Palo Alto Sweetgum". Maple-like leaves turn brilliant orange-red or bright red in autumn. Provides reliable fall color, even in warm winter areas. Narrow, pyramidal form adapts well to urban uses. Deciduous. Full sun. Moderate grower to 40' or more in height, 15-20' wide. Zones 6-9.

styraciflua 'Rotundiloba': "Round-Lobed Sweetgum". A selection that does not produce many seed balls. Unique foliage has rounded lobes, unlike other sweetgums, turning hues of purple in autumn. This handsome shade or street tree has a narrow form in youth, more rounded with age. Deciduous. Full sun. Fast growing to 40-50' high, 25-30' wide. Zones 6-9.

 

LIRIODENDRON

tulipifera: "Tulip Tree". Beautiful, large, garden tree having unique bluish-green leaves; gives a spectacular show of yellow fall color. In warm season, displays handsome tulip-shaped, greenish-yellow & orange flowers. Deciduous. Full sun. Fast grower to 50' or more tall & 30' or more wide. Zones 5-9.

 

LIRIOPE

muscari 'Big Blue': "Big Blue Lilyturf". An attractive, tufted evergreen perennial groundcover with arching, grass-like foliage. Abundant blue flower spikes rise above the foliage in summer followed by clusters of black berries. Superior edging or border for partially shaded areas. Prefers moist, but not wet soils. Tolerates drier conditions when established. Full sun partial shade. Grows 12-15" tall & wide. Zones 6-11.

muscari 'Royal Purple': "Royal Purple Lilyturf". Popular tufted evergreen perennial groundcover with arching, dark green, grass-like foliage. Spikes of deep purple flowers rise above the foliage in summer followed by black berries. This is a superb edging or border plant for partially shaded areas. Prefers moist, but not wet soils. Tolerates drier conditions when established. Partial shade. A fast growing ornamental grass growing 12-15" tall & wide. Zones 6-11.

muscari 'Silvery Sunproof': "Silvery Sunproof Lilyturf". Bold yellow & white striped dark green foliage with flower spikes of soft lilac highlight this evergreen perennial in summer. chinense 'Burgundy': "Burgundy Fringe Flower". The rich reddish-burgundy foliage matures to purple-green, & is covered by masses of fragrant, hot pink flower clusters in spring. grandiflora 'Samuel Sommer': "Samuel Sommer Southern Magnolia". Evergreen. Full & very large, flowers ranging from 10-14" wide. Large, leathery, glossy leaves are very dark green above, with heavy rusty red felting on undersides. Fairly fast growing to 30-40' tall, 30' wide.

grandiflora 'St. Mary': "Saint Mary Southern Magnolia". This small evergreen tree has glistening green leaves above with showy bronze coloring beneath. Compact form with dense branches creates a pyramidal shape. Early, large, cup-shaped, fragrant white flowers. Full sun. Slow growing to 20-25' tall, with equal width. Zones 7-9.

liliiflora 'Nigra': "Purple Lily Magnolia". Wonderful deciduous shrub having an upright open branching habit, & large two-toned, dark purple-red outside & pink inside, flowers over a long blooming season. MANDEVILLA

laxa: "Chilean Jasmine". A moderately fast growing, semi-deciduous slender stemmed twining vine that grows to 12' or more wide & high with support & develops a succulent subterranean caudex. It has luxurious 6" long bright green glossy leaves with long tapering point & an abundance of fragrant white flowers in the summer months. The tubular flowers are 2" long & flare open to 2 ½" wide with what is described as a heady vanilla aroma most pronounced in the evening, sweet like a Gardenia but not as powerful. faassenii: (usually sold as N. mussinii). "Catmint". Perennial. Makes soft gray green, undulating mounds to 2' high. Textured, toothed, aromatic, fuzzy gray leaves have volatile oils best enjoyed on warm days. Leaves aromatic & like catnip, attractive to cats, who enjoy rolling in plantings. Lavender blue, ½" flowers in loose spikes make a display in early summer. If dead spikes prove unsightly, shear them back; this may bring on another bloom cycle. Set 1-1½' apart for groundcover. NERIUM

oleander 'Little Red' PP#4836: "Little Red Dwarf Oleander". Small, evergreen shrub with long, narrow, dark green foliage. Clusters of single, dark bright red flowers in summer. Long, slender seed pods. Cold hardy. Full sun. Little to moderate watering. Great shrub for tough conditions. Height to 3-5' and just as wide. All parts are poisonous if ingested. Don't burn prunings as the smoke can cause severe irritation. Zones 7-10.

'Petite Pink': "Petite Pink Dwarf Oleander". One of the basic shrubs for desert & hot interior valleys. Moderate to fast growth. Can easily be kept to 3-4' with moderate pruning & makes an excellent informal hedge. They are not as cold hardy as regular oleanders. Pink flowers. Very poisonous.

 

NYSSA

sylvatica: "Tupelo". Foliage has an awesome display of orange-yellow-scarlet in fall; becomes a dramatic show of bare, red tinged branches in winter. Dark blue fruit attracts birds. This terrific tree has a narrow pyramid, then rounded form with age. Deciduous. Full sun. Moderate grower to 30-50' tall, 20-30' wide, can become larger. Zones 5-9.
