ECHINACEA

ERIGERON

karvinskianus: (Often called Vittadinia). "Mexican Daisy or Santa Barbara Daisy". Perennials. Graceful trailing plant 10-20" tall. Leaves 1" long, often toothed at tips. Dainty flower heads ¾" across with numerous white or pinkish rays. Blooms early summer into fall. Sun or light shade. Sandy soil; moderate watering. Drought tolerant. x. 'Blackbird': 'Blackbird' has a compact, bushy habit with exceptionally dark purple foliage that gets darker in full sun. In the spring, green yellow flowers contrast nicely with the virtually black foliage. This plant proved itself to be very temperature-tolerant as it survived the scorching 116° heat wave in the Central Valley of California. Adiantum capillus-veneris: "Southern Maidenhair Fern". Native to North America. Height to 1½' tall. Fronds twice divided, but not forked. Plants need shade, steady moisture, & soil rich in organic matter. Leaves die back in hard frost. Zones 5-9, 14-24.

Adiantum pedatum: "Five Finger Maidenhair Fern". Native to North America. Fronds fork to make finger-like pattern atop slender 1-2½' stems. General effect airy & fresh; excellent in containers or shaded beds. Plants need shade, steady moisture, & soil rich in organic matter. Leaves die back in hard frost. Zones 1-9, 14-21.

Adiantum x. mairisii: "Mairis's Hardy Maidenhair Fern'. Deciduous. Wonderful hybrid vigor for faster growth & hardier than the Southern Maidenhair Fern. Height 12-18". Part to full shade. Spreading habit. Zones 8-10.

Arachniodes standishii: "Upside-down Fern". Deciduous. Spreading habit. Prominent veins on the top of the frond give the impression you are looking at the bottom. Tall, evergreen, & lighter green than many ferns; this makes a specimen for background or naturalizing in a woodland setting. Height 12-36". Zones 6-9.

Asparagus 'Meyeri': "Meyers Asparagus Fern". Several to many stiffly upright stems to 2' or more, densely clothed with needle-like deep green leaves that give the plant a fluffy look. Forms a 3-4' wide clump. Performs well in containers. A little less hardy than A.d. 'Sprengeri'.

Asparagus densiflorus 'Sprengeri': "Sprengeri Asparagus Fern". Arching or drooping stems 3-6' long. Shiny, bright green, needlelike leaves, 1" long, in bundles. Bright red berries. Popular for hanging baskets or containers, indoors & out. Train on trellis; climbs by means of small hooked prickles. Used as billowy groundcover where temperatures stay above 24°F / -4°C. Grows in ordinary or even poor soil. Will tolerate dryness indoors. Sun - partial shade.

Asparagus densiflorus 'Sprengeri Compacta': "Compact Sprengeri Asparagus Fern". Arching or drooping stems. Shiny, bright green, needle-like leaves, in bundles. Bright red berries. Popular in hanging baskets or containers, indoors & out. Similar to A.d. 'Sprengeri' but with denser, shorter stems.

Asplenium bulbiferum: "Mother Fern". Outdoors in zones 14 (protected), 15-17, 20-24; house plant elsewhere. From New Zealand. Graceful, very finely cut, light green fronds to 4' tall. Fronds produce plantlets that can be removed & planted. Heavy or medium shade. Hardy to 26°F. Watch for snails & slugs.

Asplenium bulbiferum x oblangatum 'Floralee': "Hardy Mother Fern". Graceful, arching fronds to 2-4'. Hardier than regular Mother Fern. Partial to full shade. Evergreen. Enjoys fairly rich, well-drained soil. Slow to moderate grower.

Cyrtomium falcatum: "Japanese Holly Fern". Fronds to 10" wide, with 3-11 pairs of divisions. Coarse-textured but handsome ferns with firm-textured, glossy fronds. Takes houseplant conditions well. Part-full shade. Height 2-3'. Zones 7-10. A U. C. Davis Arboretum All-Star Selection.

Dryopteris erythrosora: "Autumn Fern". One of the few ferns with seasonal color value. Fronds are reddish when young, deep green in late spring, summer. Deeply cut fronds. Spreads by under-ground stems. 1½-2' tall. Shade. All zones.

Nephrolepis cordifolia: "Southern Sword Fern". Native to many tropical regions of the world. To 2 -3' tall, 5' wide. Tufts of bright green, narrow (2" wide), upright fronds closely spaced, finely toothed leaflets. Roots often have small, roundish tubers. Plant spreads by thin, fuzzy runners & can be invasive. Will not take hard frosts, but is otherwise adaptable, tolerating poor soil & erratic watering. Good in narrow, shaded beds; can thrive in full sun with adequate water. Effective groundcover; also good in pots & hanging baskets. Often sold as N. exaltata.

Polystichum munitum: "Western Sword Fern". Native from California to Alaska & Montana. Most seen fern of the redwood forests. Leathery, shiny dark green fronds are 2-4' long, depending on soil & available moisture. Fronds have medium coarse texture, are long lasting when cut. Old plants may have 75-100 fronds. Good for shady beds, along house walls, as large-scale ground cover, in mixed woodland plantings. Grows best in rich soil with organic matter. Established plants need little water.

Polystichum polyblepharum: (P. setosum). "Japanese Lace Fern, Tassel Fern". Lustrous shiny leaf fern adds an elegant look to shaded gardens. Dark green fronds are evenly colored with a frosted reverse along a rusty brown stem. Particularly beautiful when fronds unfurl. A reliable fine textured fern for smaller settings to fill out scant plantings. Plant masses for groundcover, particularly beautiful under flowering shrubs. Well sized for containers. Herbaceous. Shade-partial shade. Slow growing to 2' tall & wide. Hardy. Zones 6-8.

Polystichum x. dycei: "Dyce's Hybrid Holly Fern". This sterile hybrid is one of the largest Holly Ferns in the garden. It is dark green & glossy with a center crown to give it a symmetrical appearance. Semi-evergreen. Height to 48". Zones 6-8.

Rumohra adiantiformis: "Leatherleaf Fern". Deep green, leathery textured fronds arise in dense clusters are perfect in informal gardens or as a filler for shady beds. Cut foliage adds attractive texture to floral arrangements. Effective evergreen spreading groundcover. Great in hanging baskets. Partial shade. To 3' tall & wide. Non-hardy. Zones 9-11.

Sphaeropteris cooperi 'Brentwood': "Australian Tree Fern". 'Brentwood' is a more massive & faster growing cultivar that can become quite large. It is normally grown in #1, #5, or #15 containers for the landscape trade. In areas where hard freezes occur, it can be treated as an annual for a special effect in the garden. Do not let this fern dry out.

Woodwardia fimbriata: "Giant Chain Fern, European Chain Fern". Among the largest native Western ferns, this plant can reach up to 9' tall in wet coastal forests, but it is more typically seen in gardens at 4-5' tall, 3' wide. Spreads by woody rhizomes. Thick, leathery, medium green fronds are erect but spreading toward the top, twice cut but still somewhat coarse. Use near pool or brook, against a shaded wall, or in a woodland garden. Sometimes seen in desert areas where some shade & seepage exist. Slow to get going if dug from existing clumps; nursery plants are vigorous, fast growing. With-stands neglect once well established. FICUS

repens: (Ficus pumila). "Creeping Fig". An evergreen vine with juvenile, small, leathery, dark green leaves that mature to larger, dark, thick leaves. Shearing of mature foliage will encourage new juvenile growth. Vigorous growing, clinging, dense branches will adhere to any surface. A handsome choice for climbing walls, poles, arbors, & fences. Full sun-partial shade. Fast growing to 25-30' long. Zones 9-11.

FRAXINUS

americana 'Autumn Purple': "Autumn Purple White Ash". 'Autumn Purple' is noted for its outstanding reddish to deep purple fall color. It is a seedless variety with heavily textured green summer foliage & rounded crown. Leaves are 8-15" long with 5-9 oval leaflets. To 45' high, 40' spread. Deciduous. Full sun. Zone 4.

oxycarpa 'Raywoodi': "Claret Ash, Raywood Ash". Deciduous. Fast growing, medium-size, dark green leaves which turn wine red in fall. Blight resistant. Excellent street & park tree. A compact, round headed tree 25-35' tall, 25' wide. No seeds. Moderate water. Full sun. Zone 6.

FRUIT TREES

ROOTSTOCKS

Citation: (Pat.#5112) Dwarf peaches & nectarines to 8-14', apricots & plums to 12-18'. Very tolerant of wet soils, not drought tolerant (induces early dormancy in dry soil). Very winter hardy. Resists root-knot nematodes. Induces heavy bearing at a young age. May be held to any desired height with summer pruning.

Colt: In heavy soils, standard cherry varieties are dwarfed to about ¾ of standard, or about 22-30' if not pruned. Lesser dwarfing effect in other soils. Relatively tolerant of wet soil, apparently resistant to bacterial canker. Trees begin bearing at a young age. Trees may be held to any desired height with summer pruning.

Lovell: For nectarines, peaches, apricots, plums, & almonds. Vigorous, more tolerant of wet soils than Nemaguard, also more cold hardy. Susceptible to nematodes in sandy soils. Unpruned tree height of standard varieties is 15-25', but may be held to any desired height with summer pruning.

M-111: An excellent all-around rootstock for apples. Tolerates wet or dry soil. Resists woolly apple aphids & collar rot. Induces bearing at a young age. Unpruned tree height 80-90% of standard or about 15-25'. May be held to any desired height with summer pruning.

M-7: For apples. Unpruned tree height 2/3 of standard, or about 12-20'. Induces early & heavy bearing, resists fireblight & powdery mildew. Moderately resistant to collar rot. Good anchorage. Very winter hardy, widely adapted. May be held to any desired height with summer pruning.

Mazzard: Cherries on Mazzard are vigorous & more tolerant of wet soils than Mahaleb (but good drainage is still essential). Resistant to root-knot nematodes & oat root fungus. Unpruned tree height of standard varieties is 30-40', but may be held to any desired height with summer pruning.

Nemaguard: For nectarines, peaches, apricots, plums, & almonds. Vigorous, resistant to root-knot nematode, an excellent rootstock for well-drained soils. In slower draining soils, plant on a mound or berm. Unpruned tree height of standard varieties is 15-25', but may be held to any desired height with summer pruning.

OHxF 333: European & Asian pears on OHxF333 are dwarfed to about 2/3 the size of standard or about 12-18' if unpruned. Widely adapted, disease resistant. Trees may be held to any desired height with summer pruning.

APPLE

'Fuji' on M-7: New apple from Japan, already a favorite in Central California. Sweet, crisp, very flavorful. Dull reddish-orange skin, sometimes russetted. Ripe mid-September. Good pollenizer for other apple varieties. Fairly low chilling requirement. Self-fruitful.

'Gala' on M-111: Wonderful dessert apple from New Zealand. Crisp, nice blend of sweetness & tartness, rich flavor. Skin reddish-orange over yellow. Early harvest, 2-3 weeks before 'Red Delicious'. Good pollenizer for other varieties. Adapted to cold & warm-winter climates. Chilling requirement apparently less than 500 hours. Self-fruitful. USDA zones 4-10.

'Granny Smith' on M-111: From New Zealand. Large, late, green, all-purpose apple. Crisp, tart, excellent keeper. Requires long summer. Thrives in hot climates. 400 hours. Prolonged bloom; good pollenizer for other apples. Self-fruitful. USDA zones 6-9.

'Gravenstein' on M-111: Famous for sauce & baking, also used fresh. Crisp, juicy, flavorful, tart apple. Early bloom, early harvest. 700 hours. Pollen-sterile, pollenizer required: Empire, Fuji, Gala, Red Delicious. USDA zones 2-9.

'Pink Lady' on M-111P.P.#7880: Very crisp, sweet-tart, distinct flavor, good keeper. Skin reddish pink over green when ripe. White flesh resists browning. Harvest begins late October about 3 weeks after 'Fuji'. Self-fruitful. Chilling requirement of 300-400 hours. USDA Zones 6-8.

'Red Fuji' on M-111: Redder-skinned bud sport of 'Fuji'. Sweet, very crisp, & flavorful. An excellent keeper. Ripens in September-October. Excellent pollenizer for other apple varieties. Self-fruitful. USDA zones 5-9.

APRICOT

'Blenheim' on Citation - (Royal): All purpose freestone, sweet, aromatic, flavorful. Long-time No.1 apricot in California. Early bloom. Late June harvest in Central California. 500 hours. Self-fruitful.

'Pink Chiffon': "Daylily". Another in the pink series, with a touch of peach. Large, 4-5" flowers. Even though the color is soft & delicate, the plant is a strong triploid hybrid with dark green leaves to about 20" & flower stems rising to 24".
